The Preamble
WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a [SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC] and to secure to all its citizens:
JUSTICE, social, economic and political;
LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;
EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;
and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the [unity and integrity of the Nation];
IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.

Quick answers
- How many articles are there in the Indian Constitution?
- The articles are numbered up to 395, but many were added later with letters (such as 21A or 243ZH). Today the Constitution has 468 articles in force, arranged in 25 Parts and 12 Schedules (as on 1 May 2024).
- When did the Constitution of India come into force?
- It was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949 and came into force on 26 January 1950, celebrated as Republic Day.
- How many times has the Constitution of India been amended?
- The Constitution has been amended 106 times; the latest in the official text is the 106th Amendment Act, 2023, which reserves one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha, the State Legislative Assemblies and the Delhi Assembly.
